Periodontics

Periodontics is the field of dentistry dealing with the treatment of periodontal diseases, i.e. diseases of tissues surrounding teeth. These diseases are really common in the society, and, if neglected, may ultimately lead to a loss of teeth.

The most common pathological conditions are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis affects gums only, thus it is a less advanced stage, whose most common symptom is gum redness and bleeding during tooth brushing. Periodontitis, on the other hand, is much more serious, since the inflammatory process covers also other components of periodontium, not only the gum.

Here comes with help periodontics. Currently, this is a highly developed field, including both systemic treatment and, in the event of local manifestations of general diseases, local treatment. In the case of less advanced diseases, local conservative treatment is sufficient. However, it is sometimes necessary to perform advanced surgical procedures.
