Endodontics deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases of dental pulp and periapical tissues. Most importantly, the base of endodontic treatment is root canal therapy. It must also be remembered that sometimes it is the only way to save the tooth and avoid its loss. Moreover, endodontic treatment may turn out to be necessary in the event of tooth damage or before starting prosthodontic treatment.
Before start of treatment it is good to know what exactly endodontics is. The procedure is most often initiated when a tooth damaged by decay is penetrated by bacteria causing pulpitis. The treatment involves cleaning of the pulp cavity and tooth canals, and filling the resulting cavities with high-quality substitutive material.
Patients very often are afraid of procedures in the field of endodontics. They feel discomfort not only because of the visit at the dentist’s office, but also because of the possibility of pain related to root canal treatment. It is worth mentioning here, however, that adequately selected anaesthesia allows for complete elimination of pain during the endodontic procedure.
